This week du, the UAE-based telecom operator, announced the launch of their NB-IoT network in the United Arab Emirates, which will leverage Affirmed Networks’ vEPC solution to deliver applications such as smart metering, smart parking, trackers, smart health, industrial and agriculture use cases in the United Arab Emirates.

The solution, which includes best-of-breed solutions from several vendors, utilizes Affirmed Networks’ NB-IoT capabilities which are designed for applications requiring longer battery life and data rates designed for low latency applications.

The project comes after a recent successful demonstration to support water smart metering use cases as part of a broader Smart City use case.  The announcement highlights the capabilities of how standards-based solutions from leading vendors can successfully deliver NB-IoT solutions to serve a wide range of IoT applications as the industry prepares for the widespread connectivity that will accompany the arrival of 5G.

du first announced its work with Affirmed Networks at Mobile World Congress 2018, when the company shared that Affirmed Networks’ NB-IoT solution would be deployed on their fully-virtualized native, cloud, open-stack environment.  At the time du also highlighted they would also be using Affirmed’s Virtualized Mobile Core, which includes a virtualized WiFi Gateway, to deliver VoWiFi and Fixed Wireless services. du’s selection of Affirmed’s 5G-ready solution, equipped with network slicing capabilities, is intended to support du’s vision of a fully virtualized and software defined native cloud core network.

The deployment represents yet another example of how innovative operators like du are leveraging the industry’s latest advances to deliver new, innovative services to subscribers in their region.

According to Momhammed Shanableh, Vice President of Global Sales and Operations of Affirmed Networks: “du has consistently been one of the most innovative telecom operators, which is evidenced by their early adoption of NFV as an enabler for new services, such as IoT, that enterprises are looking for over 5G.”

by Amit Tiwari Amit Tiwari No Comments

Last year Intel announced the Intel® Network Builders Winners’ Circle—a program for partner companies working to accelerate network transformation using Intel technology to optimize their solutions. Last week at the SDN NFV World Congress event, Intel announced the first finalists of the program at the Intel Network Builders Summit, which coincided with the SDN NFV World Congress event, attracting more than 1700 industry participants, taking place in the event in the Hague, Netherlands.

As part of this first-ever event, Intel evaluated more than 240 projects, for consideration across three award levels: Leaders’ Board, Solution Plus Partner, and Solution Partner.

Of the 64 projects that were awarded a place in the Winners Circle, we are pleased to announce that Affirmed Networks was one of just 20 companies to join the Leaders Board, the program’s highest level.

As a company committed to working with strategic partners like Intel to ensure the highest levels of success and performance for our customers, we are extremely honored to achieve the program’s distinction. As a company, we have continually invested in building the industry’s most complete ecosystem focused on driving performance and accelerating deployments. We would like to congratulate all of the companies that were recognized as part of the Network Builders Program, especially our partners who joined us in the Winner’s Circle, including Canonical, Dell, HPE, Red Hat and VMware.

The goal of the Winners’ Circle is to deliver technical leadership, advance open source standards, and collaborate with end users to drive innovation. Requirements for selection to the Intel Network Builders Winners’ Circle included open source contributions, published benchmarks and deployments to Communication Service Providers (CommSPs).

The Next Frontier in Virtualization: Cloud Computing

by Ashwin Moranganti Ashwin Moranganti No Comments

Today, it’s not a question of “if” but “when” will an operator adopt a cloud based architecture for their mobile networks.  It’s happening now, and the coming arrival of 5G, which is based on a virtualized architecture, assures the continuation of this trend.

But, it wasn’t always such a concrete fact.

Rewind the clock back just four to five years and there was significant debate whether a virtualized network could deliver the scale and performance of traditional hardware-based networks.

Well, wouldn’t you know, we proved that they could with the ability to achieve performance gains of as much as 10X over legacy architectures

So, we were essentially able to get rid of those big, expensive, refrigerator-sized routers, and replace them with commercially-off the shelf (COTS) servers loaded with software capable of handling all the network functions previously performed by hardware.  Pretty cool.

The next big question now became, “can we eliminate the capital costs of those servers sitting in the Telco data centers and push them outside of the walls of the organization?”

Well, we are here to tell you “Yes!”

In case you missed it, last week we announced that Affirmed Networks’ industry-leading vEPC is now available through Amazon Web Services, one of the most proven and reliable cloud platforms.  Becoming the industry’s first First “Mobile Network as Service” offering, it represents a cloud-based service enabling rapid, and economical deployment of 4G and 5G services.   This new offering delivers unprecedented network flexibility and provides a significant reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), providing operators with the ability to enter new markets (and acquire new subscribers) in an extremely low-cost, “pay as you go” manner.

In addition to geographical expansion, we are seeing many of our customers excited about the ability of this model to help them deliver differentiated services – such as IoT/M2M, enterprise data, MVNO wholesale and 5G — without having to make additional capital investments in infrastructure.

We share the enthusiasm of our customers around this sift, and believe it represents a game-changer that will drive more innovation, growth, and opportunities across the industry.  So, stay tuned, because if there is one certainty, it’s that innovation is constant and there are exciting days ahead.

Affirmed Networks’ Chairman and CEO Named Finalist for Light Reading Hall of Fame Award

by Angela Whiteford Angela Whiteford No Comments

Affirmed Networks’ founder, Chairman and CEO, Hassan Ahmed, was named as a finalist as part of Light Reading’s 2018 Leading Lights Awards in the category of “Hall of Fame.”  Seeking to recognize individuals for their “remarkable contributions” to the telecommunications industry, the Light Reading Hall of Fame award will be awarded at the upcoming Big Communications Event (BCE) taking place in May in Austin, Texas.

The selection of Hassan as a candidate for this award, speaks to the credibility of the award and the types of individuals also being considered.  Throughout his career, Hassan has consistently demonstrated an ability to identify and capitalize on opportunities for market disruption.

A Stanford PhD in Electrical Engineering, Hassan has been either a CEO or a senior executive in three companies that achieved significant success disrupting incumbent providers and standard operating procedure.  He served as CTO of Cascade Communications, a pioneer in the ATM switching market, who’s equipment carried an estimated 70% of the world’s Internet traffic during the mid 90s.

In 1996, Hassan was part of the leadership team at Sonus Networks, a company focused on enabling the transformation of telephony to IP, which proved to be a disruptive force to the market.  Hassan served as Chairman and CEO of Sonus Networks for 10 years growing it from an idea into a publicly traded company with a peak market value of $15.4 billion.

In 2010, Hassan identified another opportunity for disrupting the way networks are built that resulted in his founding of Affirmed Networks.  One of the first companies to understand that traditional carrier cost structures were unsustainable, Affirmed Networks has led the transition away from costly, inflexible hardware-based networks to more agile, virtualized, software-based architectures. Affirmed has more than 78 customers, including some of the world’s largest networks such as AT&T, Vodafone, Etisalat, Telus, and many others.

Prior to starting Affirmed Networks, Hassan worked as a Senior Advisor at Charles River Ventures.  He is a guest lecturer at MIT, Hassan also serves on the board of many successful technology companies and is on the board of overseers at Boston’s Museum of Science.

We would like to thank Light Reading for their recognition of Hassan’s achievements and to also congratulate the other distinguished individuals being considered for this prestigious award.
