Affirmed Flying High After MWC19

by Affirmed Affirmed No Comments

Jet lag is one of the perils of the cross-continental pilgrimage to Barcelona for Mobile World Congress. But Affirmed returned in high spirits after a successful conference capped by high-profile appearances in the media. If you didn’t catch all the great coverage form the show, here are a some of the highlights from Mobile World Congress 2019…

It’s not just about the core anymore

One of the key messages from MWC19 was the shift of infrastructure from the core to the edge as 5G deployments continue. As Hassan Ahmed explained to Light Reading’s Phil Harvey in the article Affirmed CEO wants to own the core… & more, Affirmed is expanding its horizon beyond the mobile core. “We do service automation, we do service assurance, we close the loop on the way the network works,” Ahmed shared. “We’re really a networking company.”

Affirmed “wins” MWC19, sort of

Writing for FierceTelecom, Scott Raynovich declared the big winners and losers of MWC19, with Affirmed clearly in the winner’s camp as a leader among the “flashy startups with edge compute infrastructure or applications.” Raynovich sees potential for this space to “flourish as the investment in infrastructure shifts to the edge and the cloud domain,” citing Affirmed’s recent infusion of $38 million in new capital as a particularly encouraging sign.

Collaboration is the killer app

In an interview with TelecomTV, Affirmed’s Amit Tiwari explained the importance of collaboration in building the 5G future, relating it to the Internet’s early mantra of “the network is the killer app.” As Tiwari notes, the best practices for 5G will emerge from the collaborative work that companies like Affirmed, Intel and RedHat are engaged in today. Tiwari was also joined by members of Intel and RedHat for an in-depth interview conducted by TelecomTV that looked at their collaborative efforts to date, including Affirmed’s vEPC solution and the joint Center of Excellence established with RedHat.

5G will be the fabric of connectivity around the world

5G will be very different than 4G, driving a new generation of innovation, from smart cities to better security. In his interview with WebPro News, Hassan Ahmed lays out how 5G will drive down costs and boost security for service providers. In a world where “everything is hackable,” Ahmed sees 5G network capabilities such as network slicing (which Affirmed already provides today for 4G networks) as critical in isolating and protecting 5G communications from increasingly advanced attacks.

True to the spirit of collaboration, Affirmed also scored great exposure through our partnerships. Electronic Engineering Journal did a nice writeup on Affirmed’s groundbreaking performance with Intel’s N3000 server. And Network Media Group hosted a video panel discussion focusing on Telefonica’s edge computing deployment that featured members of Telefonica, Affirmed and Intel.

Coming off the “high” of MWC19, expectations are equally high for 5G. Stay tuned for more developments from Affirmed and our partners by watching us in the news and reading our latest press releases.

Affirmed is “must-see 5G” at MWC19

by Scott Heinlein Scott Heinlein No Comments

This year’s Mobile World Congress theme is ‘Intelligent Connectivity’. At the heart of intelligent connectivity is 5G technologies, which will be center stage at this year’s conference. Unlike previous years, however, the 5G “story” will be woven into a variety of digital transformation topics, such as immersive content and artificial intelligence. This reflects the fact that 5G isn’t simply another ‘G’ of efficiency and speed: it promises to affect nearly every aspect of the future, transforming the daily lives of mobile consumers and re-inventing the business strategies for many enterprises.

The industry has heard all this before, of course. The difference at MWC19 is that visitors can expect to see a lot more of what 5G can really do, particularly in the new wave of 5G-enabled mobile services. For mobile service providers, that’s a really big difference. With the massive revenue opportunities for 5G technologies in the enterprise space, 5G offers a tantalizing market for service providers not seen since the Internet boom and the rise of the dot-coms.

Affirmed solutions are at the center of some of the world’s leading 5G use cases, from IoT applications to next-gen 5G/Wi-Fi communications. In fact, as you move through the conference, you’re likely to see Affirmed in action wherever you see mobile service providers embracing the future of 5G services.  This includes Affirmed’s 5G Webscale mobile core solution that includes capabilities such as network slicing, real-time analytics, closed loop automation and support for 5G NR.

We’ll be showcasing some exciting 5G applications at MWC19 in our own booth (Hall 2, booth #2D50), so be sure to stop by, say “hi” and check out some of the great demos we’ll have on tap, including:

  • Closed Loop Services Automation & Dynamic Network Slicing
  • Affirmed Mobile Core 5GC
  • Affirmed Edge Solution with Augmented Reality
  • 5G EPC
  • Affirmed Mobile Core as a Service

We’re also proud to have our joint solutions appear at many of our partners’ booths at MWC19, so keep your eyes open for Affirmed at the displays for Ciena, Dell, Intel, Juniper, RedHat, Tech Mahindra and VMware.

So, if you’d like to see more of Affirmed up close, schedule a meeting with us in Barcelona—we’ll be there every day from February 25th through the 28th.

Affirmed Dramatically Accelerates Three’s Network Transformation

At MWC 2018 in Barcelona, we were thrilled to announce that Three UK – one of the most disruptive players in the telecom industry – has selected Affirmed’s cloud-based Service Awareness, GiLAN services, and virtual probe and analytics as part of a network transformation to dramatically accelerate creation and delivery of new services and experiences.

Three UK has operations in 11 countries, more than 4,400 employees, and 324 retail stores. “Three” burst onto the scene with one of the industry’s first “all you can eat” data plans and has been a disruptive force ever since, now covering 99% of the UK’s population and carrying more than 32% of the country’s mobile data traffic.

Three UK chose Affirmed to supply subscriber-centric service and control capabilities complemented by its vProbe real time intelligence and service assurance. The company is now able to more quickly deliver new service experiences more using Affirmed’s application-based charging, proxy services, TCP optimization, video optimization, security services, and more. Three expects to cut its network complexity substantially by combining multiple network functions on a single platform.

Giving customers more freedom—and handling the data explosion that comes with it

Bryn Jones, CTO of Three UK, describes his company’s mission as “giving our customers the freedom to use the mobile internet anytime anywhere” by emphasizing all-you-can-eat services and free roaming. Jones expects data traffic to grow 30% per year, and Three has decided NFV is the right approach to a new architecture.

“With data growing so fast, operators can no longer take nine months to put hardware in to provide additional capacity,” says Jones. “NFV allows us to grow and scale up faster. A distributed NFV solution and distributed network prepares us to manage the data explosion that is coming with 5G. We can think about how to distribute our network to handle all that new data without creating pinch points.”

Breaking down old paradigms and providing new architectural models

“To provide great experience you have to know the experience [customers] are getting, including service level, speeds, and more. Controlling and understanding the user plane data crossing the network helps us know how to use the network in the right way to provide users with the best experience.”

“Very few people can provide all the services you need to control your network in the NFV space,” Jones points out. “You need to understand orchestration, what happens when you spin up a new service, and how your probes and monitoring systems must adapt to the new service. Affirmed’s deep expertise is valuable for us. Affirmed analytics in the network will be crucial in getting the data we require and acting on policies we want to put back into the network.”

Affirmed’s Network Function Virtualization (NFV)

Affirmed’s Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is the foundation for achieving efficient carrier-grade solutions. A software-based platform running on standard multi-core hardware, NFV is a key technology allowing telecom operators to move towards 5G with core and edge cloud computing and network slicing, and offers an agile, fast and more efficient model that best serves the operators’ subscribers.
