Cloud Native: Why Cloud Readiness Matters Right Now

by Ashwin Moranganti Ashwin Moranganti No Comments

Cloud-native architecture. The words themselves are likely to elicit a range of reactions, from apathy (“Do we even need that?”) to annoyance (“Don’t we have enough to do?”). In fact, the words should be music to the ears of mobile service providers—because “cloud-native” is a must-have for 5G.

“Cloud native” isn’t marketing hype and it isn’t a complicated architectural template. The Cloud-native 5G NG Core was designed from the ground up to support the speed, scale and service requirements of the future, much in the same way that Amazon, Google, Netflix and other cloud leaders have already done. In the simplest of definitions, a cloud-native 5G NG Core has three main characteristics:

  • It breaks traditional, monolithic network functions into microservices that are autonomous, replaceable/changeable and stateless;
  • It stores these microservices into containers that can be easily moved, arranged and managed;
  • It uses a common management tool such as Kubernetes to dynamically orchestrate the various virtual network functions (VNFs) rather than using proprietary vendor VNF managers.

From a consumer standpoint, 5G means faster speed, lower latency, and a pervasive IoT (Internet of Everything) fabric, but for mobile operators, 5G is about network slicing, innovation velocity and reducing network operating costs. In order to meet the network demands of 5G, operators need a web-scale infrastructure with dynamically reconfigurable software services –similar to what the Amazon and Google have for cloud services.

The payoff of a cloud-native 5G NG Core is enormous. It allows you to develop and deploy new services/applications much faster using continuous Agile and DevOps methodologies, gives you a network that can hyperscale efficiently (because the NFs are stateless) and provides more agility and flexibility by moving microservices into Docker containers that can be centrally orchestrated through an open-source tool such as Kubernetes. As you can see, a cloud-native architecture doesn’t compete with the goals of NFV/5G, it supports them and in many cases turbocharges them.

Yes, you can try to build an NFV/5G network without a cloud-native architecture. But, sooner or later, you’re going to hit a wall in terms of the performance, scale and cost savings you achieve. Cloud native isn’t a question of “If,” but “When.” If your NFV/5G vendor doesn’t have a clear path to cloud-native capabilities in their solutions today, you may not have a clear path to creating a cloud-based network in the future. It’s a path we set out on from the beginning when we first designed our virtual EPC to support microservices, containers and service automation/orchestration. If you want a cloud-native core from a leading NFV/5G vendor, talk to us to ensure you don’t find yourself playing an expensive game of cloud catch-up while your competitors lead the way with innovative new services and better customer experiences.

As always, MWC 2018 was a whirlwind of customer meetings, demos, and meeting with industry influencers. In addition to all this activity, Affirmed Networks’ Chief Architect, Ron Parker, participated in a lively session about which part of the network would be most critical in a 5G world.

Affirmed’s Ron Parker advocates the importance of the Network Core in a 5G world during a session at MWC 2018 in Barcelona.

The session, led by Dr. Bi Qi President of China Telecom Technology Innovation Center, which was titled “Debate: Do 5G Business Cases Depend More on Core or Edge Upgrades,” featured an impressive group of representatives from across the global telecom industry, who were split into teams to advocate one side over another. During the session, much of the debate centered on highlighting the unique business cases that are being built around 5G technologies, and how those are influencing the business and technology roadmaps of operators globally.

A proud member of “Team Core,” Parker’s views focused on the importance of a 5G core in terms of its ability to deliver, tailored “slices” of the network to enterprise customers, offering significant growth prospects for network operators offering connected services such as IoT and M2M.

Affirmed Networks Joins the Debate - Core vs. Edge in a 5G World?

Affirmed’s Ron Parker participates in a panel of thought-leaders from companies such as China Telecom, ECI, Qualcomm, ZTE, and others.

As expected, both sides presented articulate views and informed insights to support their respective sides, offering the audience a unique opportunity to hear perspectives directly from some of the leaders responsible for helping the industry move to 5G. Following the impassioned debate, fortunately, both sides parted amicably — mutually agreeing on the significant growth opportunity that 5G will provide across the ecosystem.

One of the panel’s more vocal participants, Parker offered several perspectives, including a closing remark highlighting the importance of 5G:

“The future of mobile networks is here today. Cloud-native and virtualized, the 5G-ready core networks being deployed by today’s innovative operators are enabling a new breed of customized slices, services and revenue streams over the years ahead.”

Light Reading Recognizes Affirmed Networks for Innovation & Execution

by Angela Whiteford Angela Whiteford No Comments

Over the past several years, Affirmed Networks has been leading the industry’s transition toward virtualized networks – a journey that began with an evaluation of the technology as a potential game-changer and has now moved to widespread adoption as Communications Service Providers (CSPs) globally embrace the NFV as the next-generation network architecture.

Throughout this evolution, the team at Affirmed has diligently maintained its focus on developing world-class technology and delivering solutions that are transforming our customers’ networks, and more importantly, their bottom-lines. While the success of our customers continues to be our sole benchmark of success, it is becoming clear that the impact we are having is being noticed by the industry’s top observers and influencers.

This past week, Affirmed Networks was named as a finalist in two key categories as part of Light Reading’s annual Leading Lights awards program that coincides with the Big Communications Event taking place in Austin, TX in May. Specifically, we have been short-listed as a finalist in the “Best New Product (Telecom)” and “Company of the Year (Private)” categories, which is a tremendous honor.

We believe that our recognition in the “Best New Product” category is the result of our continued focus on developing and delivering technologies designed to meet the needs of our customers as they transition toward NFV-based architectures. While over the past year we have delivered several examples of innovative functionality and solutions – such as our Virtualized Wi-Fi Gateway and Active Intelligent vProbe – that are worthy of recognition, the solution that Light Reading has chosen to honor among the best new products for telecom operators is the Affirmed Service Automation Platform, or ASAP as we call it. We believe ASAP is squarely in line with the needs of operators as it reduces the time it takes to create and deliver new services across legacy and virtualized networks. ASAP allows operators to seamlessly and centrally manage service provisioning end-to-end, leading to faster service deployments, simplified service management, and a superior customer experience. Just as our Mobile Content Cloud offering has been critical in helping the network transform to virtualized architectures, our ASAP solution is another example of the type of innovation that Affirmed Networks has been committed to delivering to the industry since we were founded, and we are extremely honored that it has been selected as a finalist for this coveted award.

We believe that our selection as a finalist in the “Company of the Year (Private)” category is representative of the overall efforts of our entire team . We are now supporting 30 customer deployments and an additional 40 trials. We have continued to deliver innovations to the market, while supporting live deployments at some of the world’s largest operators including AT&T, LG U+, Telus, Vodafone and many others across all geographies. While we are proud of our efforts, we are truly honored to receive the recognition and consideration for this award.

On behalf of all of us at Affirmed Networks, we would like to thank Light Reading for recognizing our continued focus on innovation and our goal of helping operators worldwide to realize the transformative benefits of NFV as a next-generation architecture. It truly is an honor to be recognized among so many worthy candidates.
